There is headscale as an alternative to tailscale, but having looked at it, it just adds more complexity to setup that negates some of the benefit for the less technical user to configure/setup.īut if you are insistent on headscale, thkfully lawrence made a youtube guide for that also. Thanks does this show up in the GUI after making? But for newbies it just makes the process of remote access easier to setup/use (if you can somehow ignore those other concerns mentioned). the main concern is the close source portions of the app, and the centralized server to tailscale to help you make this work. I haven't tried zerotier myself, but i did try tailscale, and it was indeed much easier to setup. i just link here 2 example videos of tailscale usage (my main recommendation for tailscale is to setup via pfsense router package, since it simplifies the process compared to previously)īut basically these are just some methods of setup for VPN to remote access to your networks, if you need a secure way to access to your NAS remotely. tailscale/Īlso previously posted about tailscale in the qnap forum, so you can do a search for "tailscale" in keywords if you are interested to learn more about it. So maybe stick to plain Wireguard or use Zerotier. Headscale project could be an answer to that but it's grassroots and unverified. And I didn't even touch upon their reliance on Google or Microsoft for authorization. But Control plane software is closed source, so you can't use it without doing all authentication through their central servers. User applications for Linux are open source, Win and Mac are closed source. Tailscale is a good product and made by smart people but it's Open Source only in marketing speech.
